The Hon. Galahad Threepwood’s decision not to publish his scandalous reminiscences will lose him a small fortune, but he’s one of a bulldog breed who doesn’t readily admit defeat. However, Monty Bodkin, abruptly given the boot by Lord Tilbury, has taken up his secretarial duties at Blandings Castle, home of Lord Emsworth and his adored pig, Empress of Blandings. There it seems the publication - or otherwise – of the memoirs is becoming a cause célèbre. Three camps are forming: those who want the book published, those who want it suppressed and those who have been sent to steal it. Whichever side they’re on, it’s bound to involve blackmail, theft and the abduction of the Empress... P.G. Wodehouse was born in 1881 and died in 1975 on St Valentine’s Day, only weeks after being knighted. He is most famous for the creation of Jeeves and Wooster, and many of his novels have been recorded as audiobooks, including 'Thank You, Jeeves', 'Very Good, Jeeves', 'Blandings Castle', 'Ukridge' and 'The Code of the Woosters'.

Customer Reviews

Heavy Weather is the fourth audiobook for CD in the Blandings Castle series, written by the master of upper-class intrigue and toffee-nosed tomfoolery, PG Wodehouse. It begins simply enough, with Monty Bodkin, a month’s wages in his pocket and the burgeoning desire for a quick snifter, having to decide whether to slake his thirst at the Bunch of Grapes or the Drones Club. But of course, Wodehouse being Wodehouse, this is just the first step into a tangled world of misadventure and mistaken identity.

Jonathan Cecil takes the reins as narrator, gleefully inhabiting all the characters with style and panache. His natural, cut-glass tones are used to their very best, and his rich, fruity narration captures the atmosphere of the era and the social class that Wodehouse so enjoys poking fun at. Cecil, once described by The Spectator as “one of the best upper-class-twits of the era,” also played Bertie Wooster in TV’s Thank You, PG Wodehouse. He has acted alongside Peter Ustinov and recorded a number of Wodehouse’s works as audiobooks for MP3.

This CD audiobook is for lovers of language. Wodehouse is an old-school wordsmith, full of charm and wit. The spacious halls of Blandings Castle are waiting for you to stroll amongst them; settle back with an old port and a ripe stilton and enjoy.
