In the early 1970s, the eccentric old itinerant, Maggie Shepherd, parked her van in Alan Bennett’s driveway and proceeded to live there until her death in 1989. Their resulting bizarre relationship is brought into the spotlight by Bennett’s critically acclaimed account of their clashing social positions, divergent views on personal hygiene and the author’s tested patience as a hard-pressed landlord.

Alan Bennett is widely known for his comic flair and intelligent political observations. This CD audiobook recording is read by the author himself and demonstrates his most commendable storytelling attributes at their very best whilst. At the same time they provide a fascinating autobiographical insight into his strange and bizarre life, as well as the characters that occupy it.

This non-fiction account of living alongside Maggie Shepherd is at times a bittersweet comedy about the difficulties of accommodating a barking mad old lady, as well as a remarkable true story which reveals the kind, accepting nature of the well-loved British satirist.

Laugh at loud as you discover the mad letter-writing, wheelchair wangling, sanitation neglecting escapades of Bennett’s difficult old tenant with this delightful CD audiobook. All Alan Bennett titles are also available to download as audiobooks on MP3.
