Sharpe is no stranger to wreaking havoc and this aptly named novel written by bestselling author Bernard Cornwell is one of more than 20 novels that follow Richard Sharpe into battle. This historical narrative is set during the bloody Napoleonic Wars and it is the second book in the series between Sharpe’s Rifles and Sharpe’s Eagle, but it was the 20th book to be written. This fictional tale, as with the others in the 24-strong series, was made into a popular TV series called Sharpe that was produced and aired by ITV.
Sharpe’s Havoc is predominately set in Portugal as the Oporto Campaign gets into full dramatic swing in 1809. A traitor needs to be disposed of as the French forces desperately flee as the British celebrate a noble victory. Sharpe is left with the mission to kill Christopher, who while he had failed to cause any lasting harm he was a turncoat nonetheless. The French forces force their way onto a narrow bridge as the Portuguese barricade fails to withstand the pressure and it is here that Sharpe comes face to face with the man he must kill.
William Gaminara, who stars in BBC drama Silent Witness, reads this CD audiobook as listeners are captivated by Sharpe’s heroism and bravery in yet another battle of grit and determination.
