Department X is a much more multi-layered story than you might first think. It begins with the last of Cardiff’s department stores, GR Owen, closing down. But who are the mysterious ‘Administrators’ and what could they possibly gain from such an innocuous old building?

Department X sees Captain Jack and the gang pitched against new adversaries in a story that is reminiscent of the early Torchwood series. While it’s not as dark as some of its predecessors, the non-stop action, mystery and atmosphere all combine to create a fast-paced and engaging thriller.

Kai Owen does the vocal work, brilliantly capturing the essences of each of the established Torchwood characters and creating some truly memorable new ones. The sound effects and backing music help to capture the listener’s imagination, allowing them to live the action and adventure. Department X differs from other Torchwood audios in that it is not a first-person POV, opting instead for a more traditional, third-person narrative. However, this departure does nothing to dampen the story’s excitement and intrigue.

Department X is a great addition to any fan’s collection and helps to bridge the gaps between the last series and the forthcoming US collaboration.
