When you buy a CD audiobook of The Sarah Jane Adventures and discover that it’s narrated by Elizabeth Sladen herself, then you know you’re in for a treat. If there was ever an actress who knew her show and knew her audience, it was this one. Pitched perfectly so as to make it not too scary for younger listeners, The Ghost House is a deliciously chilling thriller.
The story begins with a house mysteriously appearing in Bannerman Street. While the local milkman reckons it’s part of a TV make-over show, Sarah Jane isn’t so sure. Writer Stephen Cole expertly divides the story between the present day and 1884, which is where the troubles began. Before too long Sarah’s in trouble, but manages to enlist the help of an alien bounty hunter ‘Deathy’.
In addition to Sladen’s expert narration, the BBC have thrown in some superb sound effects to ramp up the fear factor. While older listeners might have to forget how old they are for a time, younger listeners will be entranced as they walk that tightrope between being scared and enjoying the experience. This MP3 audiobook is perfect for fans of the TV show and an ideal introduction for budding science fiction enthusiasts.
