After the popularity of The Curse of Peladon, the BBC thought it might be a good idea to revisit the planet, 50 years after the Doctor’s first visit. Unfortunately, although the Peladonians had improved their technology, the same can’t be said for the BBC’s special-effects.
However, strip away the rubber costumes and the scratched-on laser beams and what you’re left with is a superb political thriller with a fearsome monster at its heart. This is a fine example where a CD audiobook can help a strong story transcend its visual detractions.
The Monster of Peladon centres on a burgeoning war between Peladon and the mysterious Galaxy Five. With the valuable trisilicate mining operations in danger of being halted by the titular Monster, it’s high time someone called the Doctor. Wait – what’s that wheezing, groaning sound..?
This CD audiobook takes the form of the original soundtrack, with linking narrative provided by the sublime Elizabeth Sladen. Pertwee’s on form, rattling off his lines with debonair aplomb and his dialogue with the Ice Warriors is pure gold. A must for anyone wanting to relive their childhood or for New Who fans who want to find out more about their favourite Time Lord.
