The title says it all: you get the first three incarnations of the Doctor working together to face the deadliest threat in the Time Lord’s career, so far. Written to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the BBC series, this CD audiobook is a treat to listen to, capturing all the tension and frivolity of reuniting the Third Doctor with his former selves.
The story almost takes second-place to the joy of hearing the Doctor bickering and arguing with himself. However, the story centres on Omega, a renegade Time Lord, and his plans to conquer the universe. The Time Lords themselves permit the Doctor to break the Laws of Time and enlist the help of the First and Second Doctors. Amidst the time-travel and chase sequences, there is some wonderful dialogue between the Doctors and an idea that would set the template for future anniversary specials.
Read by Katy Manning, who played Jo Grant in the BBC TV series, The Three Doctors is simply a joy to listen to. Unencumbered by the low production-values of the 1970’s, this CD audiobook uses narrative and sound-effects to unravel a fiendish story and bring back some much-loved characters. With the 50th Anniversary looming, fans of both the New and Classic series will revel in the chance to see the first meeting between the Doctor and himselves.
