The Seventh Doctor, played with bristling aplomb by Sylvester McCoy, was one of the most controversial incarnations of the twin-hearted Time Lord. Although he appeared a fairly benign character, this Doctor was much darker than any of his previous selves. Ghost Light sees this Doctor at his most troubled; a driven intergalactic avenger, who actively seeks danger.

The Doctor and his companion, Ace, find themselves in a creepy house in Perivale. There, they discover Josiah Samuel Smith, who seems to have all the inhabitants under his control. While the Doctor wants to find out just what’s going on, Ace is less willing, as there is something about the house that reminds her of her past.

Ian Hogg, who played Josiah Smith in the BBC TV series, takes the narrative duties in this CD audiobook. His characterisations of the Doctor and Ace are brilliantly executed, capturing them without ever straying into parody. While fans will enjoy this darker Doctor, this is also where Ace started to come into her own; she’s not quite a traditional companion, preferring to sort things out on her own terms. However, in this MP3 audiobook, we get to see the character at her most vulnerable. A superb addition to any Whovian’s collection, whether they are fans of the classic or the re-booted series.
