This CD audiobook reintroduces the race that was to become one of the Doctor’s most resilient and love-to-hate enemies. We first encountered the Cybermen in The Tenth Planet, where they proved more than a match for the First Doctor, causing him to regenerate for the first time. This BBC Drama sees the Second Doctor meeting them again, in an adventure that is now seen as a classic.

The Doctor and his companions arrive on Earth’s moon, to investigate problems in the weather-station, located there. However, the moonbase seems to be under attack from a mysterious plague and the systems are being sabotaged. All too soon, it is revealed that the malevolent forces behind these anomalies are preparing to invade Earth itself…

Anneke Wills takes the narrative reins in this MP3 audiobook adventure and gets chilling support from Nicholas Briggs as the voice of the Cybermen. Wills, who played Polly in the BBC series, proves her mettle as a narrator, ably breathing life into all of the main characters. The story is a dark one, revealing more about the origins of the Doctor’s silver nemeses and testing him to his limits. For fans of New Who, this is a brilliant introduction to the mechanical monsters, while Classic Whovians might like to rediscover their favourite spot behind the sofa… Gripping stuff.
