Superintendent Adam Dalgliesh had been looking forward to a quiet holiday at his aunt’s cottage on Monksmere Head, one of the furthest-flung spots on the remote Suffolk coast. With nothing to do other than enjoy long wind-swept walks, tea in front of the crackling wood fire and hot buttered toast, Dalgliesh was relishing the thought of a well-earned break. However, all hope of peace is soon shattered by murder. The mutilated body of a local crime writer, Maurice Seaton, floats ashore in a drifting dinghy and drags Adam Dalgliesh into a new and macabre investigation.

P.D. James, OBE, has won many awards for crime writing in Britain, America, Italy and Scandinavia, including the Mystery Writers of America Grandmaster Award and the National Arts Club Medal of Honor for Literature (USA). She received the Diamond Dagger from the Crime Writers’ Association, and was created a Life Peer. In 1997 she was elected President of the Society of Authors.

Michael Jayston is a highly-regarded actor, having appeared in numerous films, among them 'Cromwell', 'A Midsummer Night’s Dream', 'Zulu Dawn' and 'Nicholas and Alexandra'. His many TV credits include 'The Royal', 'Doctors', 'Emmerdale', 'Murder in Suburbia' and 'Only Fools and Horses', while on stage he has been seen in 'Henry V' and 'Hamlet' for the RSC, as well as 'Private Lives' and 'The Rivals'.

Poor old Inspector Dalgliesh; all he wants is a quiet holiday and he ends up investigating another murder. P D James brings her reluctant hero back out in this, his third mystery.

Of all the Dalgliesh audiobooks on CD and audiobooks on MP3, this is the one where we really get to meet the Commander. When he turns up at his Aunt Jane’s house, he’s wrapped up in the complexities of his personal life; should he marry Deborah Ruscoe, who seems to need him more than he needs her? And when he is called upon to investigate the death of a minor crime novelist, can he juggle his love life with his work? Dalgliesh’s inner turmoil and the way in which he arrives at the answers set the template for the character in all his future stories.

Michael Jayston narrates this CD audiobook. Jayston is possibly one of the UK’s most well-known voices, having practically cornered the market in voice-overs and audiobooks. His extensive film and theatre skills are brought to bear in creating a range of characters, practically all of whom are flawed and eccentric, each with their own feelings on the deceased. This book is a must for those who really want to get to know Adam Dalgliesh and lose themselves in a brilliant, psychological murder-mystery.
