Bleak maybe, but brilliant.

Review By Marcus - Bleak House may at first seem an off-putting title for a Dickensian masterpiece, but please stick with it as it is a masterpiece in every way. Written very much as a savage critique of the English legal system in the nineteenth century, when the celebrated and quite notorious case of Jarndyce v Jarndyce, this BBC Radio 4 dramatisation captures the ghoulishness of the legal system at play. The listener is immediately transported from the lawcourts of Chancery to the sepulchral gloom of the chambers of the baleful lawyer Tulkinghorn and then to the titular house itself superbly. The acting is first class, especially from the excellent Anton Lesser and the sympathetic Michael Kitchen as John Jarndyce. The audio interpretation draws out the griminess of conditions in Victorian England, and you can actually hear the insects buzzing around the locations like unpaid extras. I have thoroughly enjoyed this audio download from start to finish, and was a rare instance for me where I could close my eyes and truly live the experience as if I had been transported back there to a time when people's lives and future happiness depended on the outcome of a long and protracted legal dispute.
