Mel is the class bookworm. She prefers books to people and certainly doesn’t want to be first-week minder for new girl, Imogen. But Imogen, too, is different. There’s something odd about her - something that makes everyone feel very uneasy. Slowly, Mel discovers Imogen has a special talent - a family ‘gift’ that Mel thinks is more like a curse. And that’s when she realises that stories can happen in real life, too. For only she can stop Imogen’s private horror story - stop the bad dreams

Review By FionaL - I love this story. We had only ever read Anne Fine's funny stories before this and so weren't prepared for this delightfully different creepy story about the power of books. The story is told by the self-possessed anti-social bookworm Mel, excellently voiced by Susannah Harker. What I like about Mel is that she's happy being anti-social. She's honest about liking books more than people and her character does not undergo a miraculous change by the end of the story as in so many other books. She knows that her self-sacrificing act is going to lose her the only friend she ever had but you really feel that she's honestly happy for her friend and not lonely at being left with her books again. It is being a loner that is Mel's strength as nobody believes her discoveries, not even her friend, but she is undeterred. The story makes the point that it is OK to be different, you really don't have to conform to the expected norm, which is a great message for young people.
I don't want to give away too much about the story which is rather like a detective story as Mel unravels her new friend's secret. But I will say that it is definitely worth listening to and will not disappoint. I would say it is suitable for ages 7 to teen and not just for girls although the main characters are girls. It is definitely a different and refreshing take on the traditional ghost story and reminds me of the creepy stories I used to read in Misty comic when I was a child. (Posted on 27 January 2013)
