BBC Radio has a unique heritage when it comes to Shakespeare. Since 1923, when the newly formed company broadcast its first full-length play, generations of actors and producers have honed and perfected the craft of making Shakespeare to be heard. In the acclaimed BBC Radio Shakespeare series, each play is introduced by Richard Eyre, former Director of the Royal National Theatre. Revitalised, original and comprehensive, this is Shakespeare for the new millennium. Antony and Cleopatra centres around the soldier and noble prince Mark Antony's enthralment with the Egyptian queen Cleopatra, and the tumultuous relationship which ensues and ultimately ends in tragedy. Frances Barber and David Harewood star in a towering tale of great love, political intrigue and tragedy.

Review By georgina - I recently studied Antony and Cleopatra at University and found this reading very useful. Being dyslexic I find Shakespeare challenging and this is one of his more dense plays. However the full cast production was so helpful when reading the play along with the audio and making notes.
The actors bring drama and a meaning to the words on the page, making the play easier to understand. I would recommend this audio book to any student studying this play, I listened to it on the long train home, much less taxing and more accessible than reading the text.
In all this is defiantly worth the money, David Harewood and Frances Barber are brilliant. The short introduction at the beginning gives beneficial context too. (Posted on 28 January 2013)

Mark Antony abandons his domestic duties to Rome as one of her three leaders, to spend time in the company of the Queen of Egypt, Cleopatra. So begins this beautiful story of two people torn between Love and Duty.

In Cleopatra, Shakespeare has written possibly his most complex female character. She is at times selfish, arrogant, beguiling and vulnerable. The verse in this play is some of the most beautiful in the English language. This is Shakespeare at his best - weaving two themes into one organic whole. Mark Antony is torn between his duty to Rome and the honour it brings him. Cleopatra is drawn to Mark Antony and neglects what is proper for Egypt. The two dream of creating an empire for themselves - only to have that dream shattered.

With a long and distinguished career both on stage, TV and film (Excalibur, Rome, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows) Ciaran Hinds plays the part of Antony in possibly the most beautiful of Shakespeare’s love plays.

Arkangel have carefully chosen the majority of talent for their award winning productions from past and present members of the Royal Shakespeare Company. This is a testament to Arkangel’s commitment to delivering the high standard in audio that won it the ‘Audie Award’ in 2003. This Arkangel production is available as an MP3 download.
