Tom Baker stars in this BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of John le Carré’s powerful thriller. In the third year of perestroika, London publisher Barley Blair is sent a manuscript from Moscow. Exposing Russian nuclear threats as a sham, the information - if it’s genuine - could shatter East-West relations. Jazz-loving, hard-drinking Blair is hardly the spymasters’ idea of the perfect agent, yet they are forced to send him to Moscow to make contact. But the Cold War thaws when Barley meets Katya, the beautiful Russian intermediary who is equally sceptical of state ideology. Mere pawns in a deadly game of international espionage, they nevertheless represent the breakdown of hostilities and a future which poses a huge threat to the entrenched professionals on both sides...Both a gripping spy saga and a poignant love story, 'The Russia House' delivers all the excitement and tension expected from the master of espionage fiction. This BBC Radio 4 adaptation was dramatised by René Basilico.

The name of this spy novel derives from the section of the British Secret Intelligence Service that was set up to spy on the Soviet Union. Author John le Carré was part of the British MI5 and MI6 for many years back in the 1950s and ‘60s, and after writing a bestselling novel (The Spy Who Came in from the Cold) in 1963, he left to become an author. A film based on The Russia House starring Sean Connery alongside Michelle Pfeiffer was released in 1990, and this CD audiobook stars Doctor’s Who Tom Baker as the lead role in this gripping thriller.

With the threat of a Russian nuclear attack, Barley Blair is a London publisher in a complicated and potentially very dangerous situation. He is given a document sent from Moscow containing information that would turn East-West relationships into complete chaos. Will Barley’s new found love for Russian beauty Katya affect his ability to do what he is sent to Russia to achieve?

The master of spy fiction has managed to create another action packed novel filled with anticipation and tension that will keep you gripped right through to the end. René Basilico dramatised this equally thrilling BBC Radio 4 adaptation of The Russia House, now also available as an MP3 audiobook.
