Renowned as one of Graham Greene’s most famous novels, The Power and the Glory is a typically thought-provoking and profound story set in 1930s Mexico, dealing with the theme of religion and a range of socio-political issues. 1930s Mexico was a time of great upheaval, particularly in the church, and the organisation was greatly repressed by revolutionary communists who would persecute and even murder catholic priests.
The Power and the Glory focusses on one such catholic priest going by the name of the “whisky priest”, who during the course of the story attempts to reconcile his requirement to help others, despite feeling unfit to do so, with the horror and persecution that he and his fellow Catholics faced at the time. His own vices also play a large part in the internal struggle that the whisky priest faces, as do his attempts to deal with them.
Exploring the themes of good and evil, love and hate in the inimitable style that would make Greene one of the most celebrated writers of his time, The Power and the Glory is thought by many to be one of the greatest novels of the last century. Read by Andrew Sachs, it is available to buy either as a CD audiobook or a downloadable MP3 audiobook.
