All happy families resemble one another, each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.

In 1872 the mistress of a neighbouring landowner threw herself under a train at a station near Tolstoy’s home. This gave the novelist the starting-point he needed for composing what many believe to be the greatest novel ever written. He had been wanting to write the story of an aristocratic woman who brought ruin on herself.

The result gives us two stories in one: the courtship and marriage of Kitty and Levin; and the impossible and destructive triangle of Anna, her husband Karenin, and her lover Vronsky. These themes are used as a framework for a novel of incomparable richness and power, remarkable above all for its simple truth-telling.

Leo Tolstoy was born in1828 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all novelists, especially well-known for his masterpieces ‘War and Peace' and ‘Anna Karenina'. Tolstoy was also an essayist, dramatist and philosopher, and his ideas on non-violent resistance echoed beyond his own age.
