‘On the Margin’ is a laugh out loud 1966 comedy sketch show starring Alan Bennett, Virginia Stride and John Sergeant from ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. Unfortunately, in spite of its immense critical acclaim, the show became victim to the BBC’s tape wiping policy. This unique CD audiobook compilation is the only recording of the show that remains.
At the time of recording, Alan Bennett had already charmed the hearts of the nation with his acerbic wit and firm grasp of comic satire in light of ‘Beyond the Fringe’. ‘On the Margin’ proves his sustained aptitude for astute, humorous observation that has led him to achieve his longstanding reputation as one of Britain’s best satirists.
Prepare to be entertained by a number of cleverly constructed sketches, including a clashing exchange between a posh gentleman who is trying to send a telegram, deterred by a pedantic post office worker who unhelpfully dissects his text. Perhaps the best sketch is the final one, in which an old lady plans her own funeral whilst her distracted husband lends half an ear as he tries to fix their television set.
This high quality collection of BBC audio entertainment is available on CD audiobook, or to download in MP3 format.
