Customer Reviews

The aptly named Three plays by Alan Bennett features three of Bennett’s best plays - Kafka’s Dick, Forty Years On and An Englishman Aboard. This BBC Radio 4 full cast CD audiobook is a wonderful collection of stories from British author Alan Bennett, who has written many famous novels in his 50 years at the top of his craft including The History Boys and the Talking Heads monologues.

In Kafka’s Dick, Richard Griffiths and Nigel Anthony provide the voices for the BBC Radio 4 version of the comedy-come-drama that won Bennett so much acclamation. Kafka struggles to keep a secret hidden as the story delves into a world filled with the problems that all family relationships are prone to suffering from. Forty Years On sees Bennett star in his own production that focuses on the life of Albion House headmaster who is on the verge of retirement.

Lastly, An Englishman Abroad stars Harry Potter actor Michael Gambon as Guy Burgess and Penelope Wilton as Coral Browne, as we are drawn into an unusual encounter between a spy and an actress. All of these tales are filled with Bennett’s wit and humour and are prime examples of some of his best works that are now perfectly described as being modern classics. Also available as MP3 downloads, any of Bennett’s wonderful adaptations will make a welcome addition to any audiobook collection.
