Dickens’ tale of greed, cruelty and redemption has been enjoyed by children and adults alike since its publication in 1843. It centres around Ebenezer Scrooge, perhaps the most famous miser in literary history, and the way he treats those around him. His only concession to Christmas is to allow his overworked, underpaid clerk Bob Cratchit to have Christmas Day off with pay. However, on Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by three supernatural beings that are determined to show him the error of his ways…
Sir David Jason, one of the UK’s most well-loved actors, reads this story with relish and aplomb. Known for his uncanny ability to inhabit roles, Jason imbues each character with a life of their own, from the heartless callousness of Ebenezer to the heart-rending scene in which we learn of Tiny Tim’s possible fate. However, Jason also gives Scrooge enough humanity to ensure that his eventual salvation is both believable and touching.
With atmosphere in abundance and a central character that has become part of the season’s mythology, A Christmas Carol is a classic Christmas read. Touching, funny and deliciously scary, it cannot fail to enthral and delight readers of any age. Best listened to around an open fire!
